; Sp. Pl. 1: 184 (1753)
Distribution: Almost cosmopolitan, except Arctic Regions and Antarctica, chiefly tropical and subtropical America (ca. 900), secondary centers in Africa (ca. 50) and Australia (ca. 110). Many species are worldwide weeds. The genus suffers from excessive splitting in the Andes (by potato genetic research) and naming of many (semi)cultivated forms. The taxonomy in the S.-nigrum-group remains disputed (lumping vs. splitting).
